July 18, 2023. The Makers Hub (TMH) is thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a significant reimbursement grant of $25,000 from the Compton City Council Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). While this grant was awarded to our organization, we firmly believe that the true beneficiaries are the residents and the Greater Compton Area as a whole. The funds received belong to the community, and we consider it our responsibility to utilize this financial support for the advancement and betterment of the very community we serve.

At The Makers Hub, our core values are deeply rooted in community empowerment and inclusivity. Our belief that every individual should have access to tools, resources, and educational opportunities that enable them to unleash their creativity and fulfill their potential, motivates us to continue our work. This grant presents an incredible opportunity for us to enhance our commitment to the people of Compton by expanding our services, providing valuable knowledge, and fostering an environment where innovation and growth flourish.

We recognize that the well-being and progress of a community are intricately linked to the well-being and progress of its residents. By leveraging this grant effectively, we can empower individuals, homeowners, and families with the tools they need to not only improve their immediate surroundings but also cultivate a stronger, more resilient community fabric. We are committed to using these funds responsibly, transparently, and in a manner that delivers meaningful impact where it is needed the most.

The true measure of success for this grant lies in the positive transformation it will bring to the lives of Compton residents. Our goal is to uplift and support the aspirations of the community, working hand in hand with our neighbors to build a brighter future. As stewards of this grant, we are dedicated to ensuring that every dollar is maximized for the benefit of the Greater Compton Area, leaving a lasting legacy of opportunity, growth, and prosperity. This grant will serve as a catalyst for our ongoing efforts to empower the community by providing access to tools, resources, and educational opportunities. With this funding, we are excited to introduce an innovative workshop and strengthen our commitment to supporting homeowners in the Greater Compton Area.

A History of Empowerment

Since our establishment, The Makers Hub has been at the forefront of community engagement and revitalization in the Greater Compton Area. Our organization has actively worked on various projects, ranging from revitalizing local neighborhoods to constructing tech and media centers. Through seemingly countless clean-ups and neighborhood beautification projects, we have strived to create a strong foundation for a vibrant and thriving community.

With the grand opening of the Compton Tool Library quickly approaching, The Makers Hub aims to establish a community resource that provides equal access to tools, workshops, and resources for all Compton residents. Our mission is to inspire creativity, facilitate lifelong learning, and create inclusive and equitable opportunities that empower individuals to pursue their passions and enhance their skills.

The Power of Knowledge: Knowing Your Home/Home Systems Workshop

Thanks to the generous $25,000 reimbursement grant we have received, we are excited to introduce an engaging and informative workshop series titled “Knowing Your Home/Home Systems 101 Overview.” This comprehensive 2-2.5 hour class has been specifically designed to provide homeowners with a simple understanding of the main systems within their homes.

According to www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/compton/real-estate, 63% of those homes were built in the 1940-60s LA housing boom. These homes also lack energy-efficient design, have lead paint and asbestos, and have small electrical panels. According to a survey conducted in 2011, City staff estimates approximately 45 percent of housing units in the City require substantial rehabilitation. The report shows that 38% of homeowners and 56% of renters are in houses that do not have complete plumbing or kitchens. Making homes more energy efficient, upgrading, and doing preventative maintenance can save homeowners money to use on essentials and provide a better quality of life for the family. Upgrades and rehabilitation adds value to the home and increases the family’s sustainability.

The workshop will cover a wide range of essential topics, including electrical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, roofs, walls, and foundations. Led by experienced professionals and experts in their respective fields, participants will gain valuable insights into how these systems function and work together to create a safe and comfortable living environment.

By demystifying complex concepts, participants will leave the workshop with a solid foundation of knowledge and practical skills to address simple fixes within their homes. They will gain insights into tools they should carry or borrow for basic repairs and learn when it is necessary to seek professional assistance. As a lasting resource, participants will receive printed materials to reference after the workshop.

To further support their journey into the world of DIY home maintenance, The Makers Hub will provide each participant with a complimentary beginner’s tool kit, proudly branded with The Makers Hub logo. This kit will serve as a stepping stone for homeowners, ensuring they have the fundamental tools on hand while also encouraging them to return to the Compton Tool Library for more specialized equipment when their projects demand it.

Expanding Support: The Role of the Workshop Coordinator

With the support of this grant, The Makers Hub is proud to announce that we will be expanding our workforce by creating job positions within our organization. Our aim is to hire individuals from the local community, offering meaningful employment and contributing to the economic development of Compton. This grant will enable us to hire a dedicated workshop coordinator to work at the Compton Tool Library. This essential role will further enhance our commitment to supporting and empowering homeowners in the community.

In addition to our commitment to community empowerment and education, The Makers Hub is equally dedicated to creating economic opportunities for the local residents in the Compton area. We understand the importance of fostering job growth and providing employment opportunities that uplift the community.

By investing in our community through job creation, we not only provide individuals with financial stability but also foster a sense of pride, purpose, and ownership in the work they do. Our belief in the power of community extends beyond the programs and services we offer. We strive to be a catalyst for positive change by actively supporting the local economy and helping to build a strong and self-sustaining community.

The workshop coordinator will be responsible for providing ongoing support and guidance to community members, assisting them in navigating the tool library, and ensuring they have access to the resources and expertise needed to bring their projects to life. Through personalized consultations, workshops, and educational initiatives, the workshop coordinator will play a pivotal role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels encouraged to explore their creative potential.

A Bright Future for the Community

At TMH, we are deeply grateful for the $25,000 reimbursement grant, which reinforces our dedication to serving the community and amplifies our impact. Through accessible educational opportunities and resources, we empower individuals and families to thrive in our circular economy model, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Our “Knowing Your Home/Home Systems 101 Overview” workshop equips homeowners with valuable insights to approach maintenance and repairs sustainably, minimizing waste and environmental impact. With these funds, we are committed to advancing the Greater Compton Area and building a Makerspace that fosters inclusivity and creativity. Together, we can create a lasting impact and build a stronger, more resilient community.
