Our Story: Mid-Year Updates

Here at The Makers Hub we talk a lot about our values, including transparency about the work we’re doing as part of our promise to operate ethically and with integrity. We want to ensure that our community knows where our donations are being spent and that we’re not afraid to talk about it.

Changes & Challenges

Securing a Location
In January, The Makers Hub was able to secure a lease for the future location of the Compton Tool Library. We had spent roughly 9 months trying to find a location, running into multiple obstacles, so being able to find 2125 W. Compton Blvd and sign our lease was definitely a fantastic feeling!

Staffing
In April, we transitioned from an all-volunteer-run organization to an organization with a small staff of four. This transition meant that a lot of weight carried by multiple volunteers was able to be streamlined and handled by dedicated staff, ensuring accountability within the organization itself. I, as a staff member, may be biased but I am pretty sure I work with the most amazing set of people who are incredibly passionate about our mission.

The Challenges
Like any other organization, we are not immune from bumps in the road. In our case, we ran into some issues with construction delays. Our new location needs to undergo some major work and the delays in that process were greater than we had expected or planned for.

The Future

We are excited for the opening of the Compton Tool Library, even though we’ve faced delays, and anticipate the new official opening to be in January of 2024. We have to admit, we really wanted to make this happen a lot sooner but sometimes things are out of our control and the best we can do is adapt and continue moving forward. The Makers Hub is dedicated to making sure the community gets what it needs.

While construction is underway, we are finalizing our workshop classes that can be done prior to the building’s completion. That means we’re going to be bringing workshops like Gardening 101, Plaster & Drywall Repair, and DIY Home Electric to the community as soon as possible. Additionally, we are working with other wonderful organizations on community projects, from commercial alleyway cleanups to neighborhood block club projects throughout Compton.
