Meet the Hub Heroes: Karen Harris

Meet Karen. Karen moved to South Central Los Angeles in 1960 and is one of twelve siblings. Growing up in a big family, she saw the value of hard work and collaboration through her parents. Karen took these lessons she learned early on into adulthood as a mother, grandmother and professional.

Since becoming a resident of Compton in 1996, Karen has been heavily involved in the community. Through her work as the Block Club Captain in Sunny Cove and co-coordinator for the Compton Initiative, another non-profit organization working to transform Compton, she continues to serve the Greater Compton Area.

Karen first got involved with The Makers Hub through her connection to Adrianne Ferree, our founder. Together, they have participated in numerous neighborhood revitalization and beautification projects throughout Sunny Cove and the surrounding area. From repairing fences to backyard cleanups, there is no project too small for Karen to donate her time.

The sense of community, pride and accomplishment after completing all the work is what I remember the most about volunteering with The Makers Hub. There’s nothing like bringing a community together. The Makers Hub is bridging gaps throughout the community.

Community engagement has given us direct insights into the needs of residents. There are countless residents dedicated to the improvement and transformation of the Greater Compton Area. Through collaboration with The Makers Hub, Karen is furthering her personal goal to make Compton a safer, cleaner community.

Volunteers play a crucial role in our success at The Makers Hub. Whether you’re attending an event or spreading the word about our work, every volunteer truly makes a difference. Without volunteers, we would not be where we are today and words cannot express how grateful we are for every single person that has supported us. Knowing we have the community on our side is huge and motivates us to continue working towards our mission of bringing accessible resources to the Greater Compton Area.

I see this organization making a tremendous difference. Providing a helping hand to help people get things done where they didn’t see a way.
