Inside the Event: The Makers Hub Engages with Compton Community at Resource Fair

April 22, 2023. The Makers Hub participated in the Dollarhide Resource Fair, a six-hour event organized by King’s Journey. Our team of three members, Adrianne Ferree, our founder, and volunteers Lynn and Terri, tabled at the event, providing information and handouts to the community.

The resource fair aimed to provide the community with valuable resources and information, mostly health-related. Among the various agencies present, one was even offering to pay off late electric bills while giving away clothing and toys to the attendees. Others, like us, provided informational booths on subjects such as CPR and choking training, mental health, and home buying.  We were honored to be amongst amazing organizations working to provide for the Greater Compton Area.

At our booth, we were able to pass out over 66 multitool keychains to the attendees while spreading the word about our upcoming tool drive and the grand opening of the Compton Tool Library. “I want to print names on scrubs for my coworkers,” said one Compton resident. “It’s expensive, but if I can do it myself, I can give it to them.” Many community members saw the value in our work and expressed interest in getting involved with The Makers Hub.

Our presence at resource fairs not only allowed us to spread the word about The Makers Hub and its upcoming projects, but it also provided us with the opportunity to network with community organizations and individuals. We were thrilled to have local residents and organizations express interest in supporting our efforts in various events. These events not only allow us to connect with other organizations and residents throughout the city, but also foster a sense of camaraderie and support that is essential to creating a strong and resilient community. We believe that by working together, we can create positive change and make a lasting impact in the Greater Compton Area.

At The Makers Hub, community involvement and engagement is at the forefront of everything we do. We believe in the importance of providing equal access to tools, workshops, technology, and resources to inspire creativity, facilitate lifelong learning, and provide inclusive and equitable opportunities for all. “My husband will love this; he is trying to grow his plumbing business,” said another Compton resident. We are committed to supporting and uplifting the Greater Compton Area community, and we strive to ensure that our efforts have a direct and positive impact on the individuals and families we serve.

As we continue to grow and expand, we look forward to participating in more community events and connecting with even more individuals and organizations in the Greater Compton Area. Our mission and values guide our actions, and we remain committed to building a strong and thriving community through the power of making.
